"Man can never be alone, so he is never truly free." ~Katsuragi Misato
The Real Grade EVA 01 is the first of the (so far) 6 Neon Genesis Evangelion Real Grade models, not counting the special editions and they are all subtly different - The "standout" feature of this kit are the moving chest plates that flex when the shoulders move back and forth.
Aesthetics:
18cm tall (almost 20 with shoulder canisters) and it looks amazing. While the point of 'Real Grade' is "what would it look like if it was real and not animated", the model is quite faithful (and mind you the colors and details were far from accurate in the episodes, with animators often forgetting to include them).
The major differences are the interior details and the shoulder emblems, which are now shoulder plates instead of markings.
The pre-mold tech is used to create four different parts with different color molds, such as the purple and green horn, and molded in eyes which look amazing.
Kit comes with a real grade sticker sheet with foil and decal stickers, which are completely optional, though I think the rifle looks better with them.
Mechanics:
Overall articulation is superb, but it's also a spindly and less sturdy model than your average gunpla.
The arm and leg bends are nothing special, though they do have deep bends. Where the model shines is the segmented torso which bends and twists amazingly. The thighs have a slight bulging muscle on bends and the armguards twist when the hand twists, to mimic the radius and ulna twist, which is quite clever.
What's less clever are the chest plates that are supposed to twist and flex when the shoulders are moved forward, but instead they fall apart - I *heavily* recommend gluing the plates together, it will still work fine - just don't glue the ball joints.
The mouth and the shoulder canisters open.
Equipment:
1 Pallet Rifle - The 'standard' assault rifle for EVA units - No storage
4 Progressive Knives - 2 of them are folded and stored in the shoulder canisters
1 extra Horn - Entirely purple, there is a sticker to add the green parts. Essentially a replacement part or for painting
1 Umbilical Cable - A thick and sturdy posable cable that sticks into the back and functions as a stabilizer for the model
12 hands -
2 fists
2 rifle holding hands
2 knife holding hands
2 'karate chop' hands to recreate the sprinting scene
2 relaxed open hands
2 dramatic splayed open hands
1 Entry Plug (cockpit canister) - Inserted in the neck
Conclusion:
It's an amazing kit of an iconic character/"mech". While it has an amazing range of movement, it's also spindly and not as sturdy as gunpla, so treat it with more care. Notably, there is no base adapter or peg hole, so you need to use a 'claw' stand to hold it for aerial poses. The umbilical cable is very stable and helps keep the model in various poses and can act as a 'third leg'.
The chest plates do need to be glued so they don't come apart and be careful with stiff parts, as they are quite thin and can break easily.
